A free flowing powdered tinting composition for organic solvent or water thinned paints comprises a pigment, an oil-soluble watersoluble surfactant, and either an oil-soluble water-dispersible or a water-soluble oil-dispersible surfactant or a mixture thereof. The surfactants, which coat the pigments, are anionic and non-liquid at room temperature; they may be (i) high molecular weight acids CH 3 (CH 2 ) n CON(CH 3 )CH 2 COOH or salts thereof, e.g. cocoyl sarcosine, sodium lauryl sarcosinate, magnesium cocoyl sarcosinate; (ii) sulphonated polyesters or the sodium salt thereof e.g. sodium bis (2,6 dimethyl-heptyl-4) sulphosuccinate or (iii) dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate. Inorganic and organic pigments are widely suitable, the examples disclosing titanium dioxide, red or yellow iron oxide, chrome oxide green, chrome yellow, molybdate orange, lamp black, Cu phthalocyanine blue and green, Hansa yellow and thioindigo red. The pigment may be extended by MgC0 3 , CaCO 3 , CaSO 4 , BaSO 4 , SiO 2 , talc, soapstone, steatite, china clay, pyrophyllite, bentonite, mica, pumice or diatomite. The composition is prepared by dissolving or dispersing the pigment, extender and surfactants in a vehicle, drying the mixture at 120-150‹ F. and grinding the powder to - 80 mesh U.S.S. The dried powder may contain 7-60% by weight pigment, 13-51À5% extender, 24-50% surfactants, and not more than 3% moisture content.</p> |
