Provided is a liquid crystal element wherein a liquid crystal layer has less thickness nonuniformity. A spacer (12) has a first spacer (12a), a second spacer (12b) composed of a resin, and a third spacer (12c) composed of a resin. The first spacer (12a) is composed of an annular glass plate or an annular metal plate, which has formed therein an opening (12a1) that constitutes an internal space (18). The second spacer (12b) is thinner than the first spacer (12a). The third spacer (12c) is thinner than the first spacer (12a). In the second spacer (12b) and/or the third spacer (12c), openings (12b2, 12c2) are formed, said openings being connected to the opening (12a1) of the first spacer (12a), and constituting an injection port (17).
