A cost-efficient starter apparatus for starting small-sized internal combustion engines mounted on various manual work machines such as chainsaws, for example, which apparatus facilitates starting by storing energy in a spring (5) and using the energy for rotating the crankshaft of the engine, and which can use both the torque provided by an external power source, such as a comparatively small cordless screw driver, and a conventional starting cord (10) both for storing energy in the spring (5) and starting the engine.
