<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control a fuel concentration to be uniform as much as possible in an air-fuel mixture layer when penetration of fuel spray injected into a cylinder by an outward opening valve type injector is decreased to form a gas layer in an outer peripheral portion in the cylinder as well as to form the air-fuel mixture layer in a center portion. <P>SOLUTION: A fuel is injected from a nozzle port of an injector into the cylinder of an engine in a compression stroke so that a gas layer containing fresh air is formed in an outer peripheral portion in the cylinder and an air-fuel mixture layer is formed in a center portion.
