PURPOSE: A collision damage mitigation system and a control method thereof are provided to relieve damage due to collision of a vehicle by rapidly operating an airbag. CONSTITUTION: A control method of a collision damage mitigation system comprises: a step of sensing(20) steering angle, turning speed, horizontal acceleration, and wheel speed of a vehicle; a step of judging(21) whether horizontal slip occurrence of the vehicle or not; a step of sensing(22) ambient condition of the vehicle in case of being judged as the vehicle slips to the horizontal direction; a step of determining(23) whether there is an object which approaches to the surroundings of the vehicle which slips to the horizontal direction; a step of determining(24) whether colliding side direction of the vehicle is predicted or not in case of being judged whether there is the object which approaches outside of the vehicle which slips to the horizontal direction; and a step of releasing(25) operation condition of the airbag if the colliding side direction of the vehicle is predicted.
