A bag, or carton, Fig. 15, has a bellows fold 24 in its base which, when the bag is opened, forms a flat bottom with triangular pockets 39 extending up opposite edges 38 of the bag. In one embodiment the bags are formed from tube pieces, Fig. 3, with bellows folds at each side, closed at either end by folding and pasting down flaps 26. If the tube is lined with suitable material it may be closed by heat seals before folding in flaps 26. In an alternative form flaps 26 are absent and the tube ends are closed by separate tapes pasted on. The entirely closed bag formed as above may have a hose inserted in one of its folded ends to produce a valve bag. Alternatively the tube is cut longitudinally into two open-ended bags which are expanded by inserting contents, or by separating the sides by suction nozzles 41, Fig. 12, and inserting linked plates 42, 43, to flatten the bottom, Fig. 13. To facilitate opening the bag it is folded as in Fig. 14 after the triangular pockets 39 have been glued. Slits 44 produce flaps 45-48, Fig. 15, when the bag is expanded. The bag may be single or multiply, and one of the plies may have a coating of heat sealing material. In a further method open-ended bags are produced from a tube open along one longitudinal edge and having a bellows fold along the other. |
