PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust gas catalyst with high capacity to selectively decompose HC (hydrocarbon).

SOLUTION: The exhaust gas purifying catalyst is obtained by supporting copper on a support in which zirconium is doped to aluminum phosphate, wherein the amount of dope of the zirconium to the aluminum in the aluminum phosphate is 0.05 molar ratio to 0.5 molar ratio.
