[Also in Division B8] A vehicle for moving heavy loads over short distances by rail comprises a frame 3 carrying hydraulic means, whereby some or all of the weight of the load is transferred to railway wheels 8 driven from a low power engine 13 through transmission means comprising a torque converter 14, a clutch 15, reduction gearing 16 and a chain drive 17. As shown, part of the load on one axle of a railway waggon 1 is transferred to the wheels 8 by levers 10 pivoted by hydraulic rams 21. The vehicle is driveable off the rails on rubber-tyred steerable wheels 4 and driven wheels 20 lowered by the levers 10 to raise the wheels 8. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), the load is supported on tables having four adjustable-length legs, and the vehicle runs beneath the tables which are lifted by hydraulic rams to raise the legs from the ground. |
