A sealing ring 2 of V cross-section for a universal joint is compressed between a shoulder on the shaft 11 and the end of a bearing 3 in which the shaft rotates, a rigid member 4 made of metal or plastics material being provided to protect at least one of the lips of the ring and close the recess between the lips. The protecting member 4 may have a cylindrical or slightly conical wall 6. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the protecting member is cylindrical and bears on the outer periphery of the lower lip (7). In another modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the radial flange of the protecting member is recessed into the end face of the lower lip (7). The seal may be used to centre the parts of a universal joint during assembly, Fig. 5 (not shown). |
