Motor vehicle diagnostics apparatus (110, 152) for diagnosing a fault associated with a motor vehicle comprises a diagnostics unit (110) connectable to a motor vehicle control system in place of a second component (172), the apparatus (110, 152) being operable to detect electrical signals applied by the control system to the unit (110) and provide an output in response to the detected signals. The diagnostic unit may be connected to a harness of the control system or a first component. The second component may be isolated from the control system. Detected signals may be logged and may be compared to expected signals and an output provided on the basis of the comparison. The diagnostic unit may be able to simulate signals generated by the second component and apply these to the control system. The diagnostic unit is preferably able to communicate with the controller area network (CAN) bus of the vehicle. Messages that would otherwise have been generated by the second component (172) can be transmitted via the CAN bus by the diagnostic unit to simulate operation of the second component. The apparatus allows vehicle data to be monitored in real time without being restricted to stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). |
