[Also in Division D1] Novel compounds of general formula in which R 1 is alkyl or haloalkyl and X 1 is H or the group -CH 2 -CO-N(CH 2 OH) 2 , are prepared by reacting the corresponding amide with paraformaldehyde usually at temperatures up to 150‹ C. and, if appropriate, in the presence of a basic catalyst such as KOH, NaOH, CH 3 COONa, MgCO 3 or MgO. Specified compounds when X 1 is H are those in which R 1 is CH 3 -, C 2 H 5 - or ClCH 2 CH 2 - and when X 1 is -CH 2 -CO-N(CH 2 OH) 2 , R 1 is C 2 H 5 -. The compounds have flame-proofing properties.
