A luminaire (150) with an LED based illumination device (100) having at least one LED (102) includes a transmissive lens element (170) that in combination with reflector (125) is able to generate an output beam with a sharply defined large angle intensity profile. The reflector element (125) is mounted to the LED based illumination device (100). The transmissive lens element (170) includes first and second interior surfaces (171, 173) and third and fourth exterior surfaces (172, 174). A portion of light emitted from the LED passes through the first interior surface (171) and the third exterior surface (172) and refracts towards an optical axis of the LED based illumination device (100), and the reflector element (125) without interacting with the reflector element. Another portion of light emitted from the LED (102) passes through the second interior surface (173) and fourth exterior surface (174) and refracts away from the optical axis to be reflected by the reflector element (125). |
