The method involves visualizing an ahead-lying track section on a display area (3). Graphical objects are associated with a function of an automatic longitudinal control, and a visualized track section is represented in the longitudinal control. A video picture sequence is recorded at the ahead-lying track section and reproduced on the display area. One of the graphic objects of the sequence is overlaid. An input field is overlaid into the sequence. Selected and/or selectable parameters e.g. vehicle speed and/or distance in headway, of the longitudinal control are visualized. The graphical objects comprise a spacer bar, placeholder vehicle, beam sections and traffic indicator. An independent claim is also included for a driver assistance system with an automatic longitudinal control for a vehicle.
