A needle tip protector (202) has a housing (204) and a resilient member (16) axially slidable relative to the housing (204). The housing (204) has a projection (240) sized to engage an engaging element (148) in a catheter hub (114). A needle (14) extends through the tip protector (202) and is withdrawn into the tip protector (202) to facilitate removal of the tip protector (202) from the catheter hub (114).
