A biodegradable detergent composition comprising (a) olefin sulphonates and/or hydrogenated olefin sulphonates containing 10 to 24 and preferably 15 to 18 carbon atoms, (b) an alkali metal or ammonium salt of a pentavalent phosphorus acid in an amount of to 3 parts by weight per part of olefin sulphonate, (c) a primary alkanol containing 10 to 15 carbon atoms, which is a normal or 2-methyl isomer, in an amount of from 4 to 40 parts by weight per hundred parts of olefin sulphonate. The phosphate (b) may be a tripolyphosphate, pyrophosphate, metaphosphate or orthophosphate of sodium, potassium or ammonium. The alkanol (c) is preferably a mixture of dodecanol-1 and 2-methyl dodecanol-1. Optional additions are anticorrosion, antiredisposition, bleaching and sequestering agents; optical whiteners and inorganic salts. Specified are sodium silicate, sodium sulphate, carbonates, borates and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. The sulphonate may be in the form of the sodium, potassium or ammonium salt.</p> |
