An electrical connector assembly comprises a plug connector 14 and a receptacle container 16, each having a plurality of contacts 82, 52 secured in individual bores 32, 134, 136 within the connectors, there being means for moving the contacts in one of the connectors to mate with the contacts in the other connector after the two connectors are secured together, the means comprising two insulator actuating plates 126 which are movable in opposite directions. The connector 16 carries a centrally mounted shaft 62 with a slotted 205 locking means 58 at one end so that when the connectors 14, 16 are brought together the means 58 co-operates with a key (114) on a locking plate 102 secured to the connector 14 and they can be locked together by rotating the shaft. Rotation of the shaft 62 also causes an actuating cam 206 thereon to move the actuating plates 126 away from each other so that lips 138 formed in the bores 134 in the plates bear against beam portions 152 of the contacts 52 to move them to mate with the contacts 82 in the connection 14.
