<p>A known volume of radio-active gas is fed to the patient's lungs, and the radiation observed externally. A known voume of gas sufficient to fill each lung is then fed in, and the radiation emitted by the unknown volume of gas in each lung likewise observed. The volume of each lung filled with gas is determined to compare the extent of the radiation observed for each lung filled with the unknown volume of gas with the extent of the radiation observed for the lungs filled with known volume of gas.</p> |
