PURPOSE: A device for extracting a depth map image and a method thereof are provided to extract the depth map image by using a photographed stereo image or sensed infrared rays, thereby safely extracting the depth map image in low illumination environment. CONSTITUTION: An illumination sensing unit(100) senses illumination of an object. When the sensed illumination is more than reference illumination, the illumination sensing unit drives a stereo camera by outputting a first signal to a stereo camera(110). The stereo camera obtains a stereo image of the object. A depth map image extraction unit(130) extracts a depth map image by using the obtained stereo image.
