Alkali metal aluminium hydrides prodn from - elements

Hydrides of gen. formula:- MAlH4 (in which m is Na, K, Rb or Cs) are produced by reacting alkali metal with Al and H2 at elevated temp. and pressure in MAlH4 melt. Temp. and pressure conditions are 200-350 degrees C. and 175-300 atm., when M is Na and 250-400 degrees C. and 100-250 atm. when M is K, Rb or Cs. Slight stoichiometric excess of Al is pref., i.e. 1-5% for Na and 3-10% for K, Rb or Cs, referred to wt. of alkali metal. Product does not require purification before use in production of other hydride cpds. or as reducing agent and catalyst in synthesis of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Process is simple and economical.
