C3 crystals are produced using C cpd. with more than two atoms in mol. as starting material, e.g. naphthalene, anthracene or benzene. Proportionate wt. of reagent (e.g. SiO2, H2O2 and/or O2) is added which combines with substances other than C, so that C is liberated. These materials are compressed to density of diamond (e.g. 3.5. g./cc) and only the heated to is approx. 2000 degrees C, ensuring that chemical reacted cannot occur until density reaches desired value. Initial reaction temp., reaction rate and magnitude of heat generated can be regulated, within limits, by suitable choice or mixing of reagents. These larger mols., having part of electrons already delocalised, are more easily converted to diamond (C3) than is graphite (C2). Colouring additives may be incorporated. |
