Abstract An image forming apparatus includes an image forming unit (10) that forms an image on a recording sheet (S); a 5 transport unit (43) that transports the recording sheet on which the image is formed by the image forming unit (10); a support surface (140) that supports the recording sheet (S) transported by the transport unit (43); a rotating member (110) that has an outer peripheral surface pressed against 10 the support surface (140) and that rotationally follows the recording sheet (S) when the recording sheet (S) passes through between the support surface (140) and the outer peripheral surface; an ascertaining unit (85) that ascertains a length of the recording sheet (S) on the basis 15 of an amount of rotation of the rotating member(110); and a restricting unit (300) that restricts a movement of the rotating member (110) that moves toward the support surface (140) after the recording sheet (S) passes through between the support surface (140) and the outer peripheral surface 20 of the rotating member(110). The restricting unit (300) prevents the outer peripheral surface, which comes into contact with the recording sheet (S), of the rotating member (110) and the support surface (140) from coming into contact with each other.
