The shutoff device has an operating device (2) for opening and closing the water supply into a riser pipe (3) of the hydrant. A shutoff body (1) is movable between two positions along a vertical axis of the hydrant, where the water supply is closed in the former position and the water supply is opened in the latter position. A coupling device (4) is arranged in the riser tube, which couples the operating device with the shutoff body. The shutoff body is tube shaped and the water pressure of the water supply acts directly on the shutoff body in no position of the shutoff body.
