A method for producing a water-absorbing resin, which comprises a step wherein a water-soluble ethylenically unsaturated monomer is subjected to a reversed phase suspension polymerization in a petroleum hydrocarbon dispersion medium in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator and a dispersion stabilizer. This method for producing a water-absorbing resin is characterized in that an ether-ester nonionic surfactant is used as the dispersion stabilizer. A water-absorbing resin which is obtained by the above-described production method and has a saline holding capacity of 25 g/g or more, a saline absorption rate of 50 seconds or less, and a moisture absorption fluidity index of 70% or more. A water-absorbing resin which has high water holding capacity, excellent water absorption rate and excellent fluidity after moisture absorption can be produced by the method of the present invention. A water-absorbing resin having such specific physical properties improves various properties of a sanitary material and is suitable for use in the production of a sanitary material.
