Apparatus for centrifugal liquid/liquid countercurrent extraction comprises a rotor 14, Fig. 1. which rotates at a different speed to that of centrifugal drum 7 and divides the drum into two chambers 15 and 16, inlet 20 for heavy liquid, inlet 21 for light liquid, serated protuberances 22 and 23 attached as shown to effect agitation of the liquids and a plurality of radial partitions 24, 25 connected to rotor 14 which form quiescent zones to reduce entrainment of light liquid in the heavy liquids or heavy liquid in the light liquid. Light liquid leaves at 10 and heavy liquid leaves via annular gap 17, flange 13 and outlet 32. In the embodiment of Figs. 6 and 11, a agitation of liquids is effected by plates 56, in Figs. 14 and 16 by rings 87 and 89, through which rings the liquids may be introduced into the drum. The rings 87 of Fig. 14 may be frusto conical, and may have the cross section as shown in Figs. 18 and 19. |
