The apparatus has sensor units (44,45) comprising several magnetic field sensor elements for receiving a signal dependent on characteristics of power line in ground. A control and evaluation unit (46) is adapted to control the sensor units and to evaluate the received signal. A display unit is designed to display received signal evaluated by control and evaluation unit. The magnetic field sensor elements are independently controllable by control and evaluation unit. An independent claim is included for method for detecting power line in underground.
