PURPOSE: A nitrogen oxide sensor using an oxidation catalyst is provided to convert nitrogen oxide gas into nitrogen monoxide and to utilize an oxide pumping cell dissolving the converted nitrogen monoxide into oxygen and nitrogen, thereby measuring the total amount of nitrogen oxide gas. CONSTITUTION: A nitrogen oxide sensor comprises a measurement cell(10), an oxygen pumping cell(20), and a plug. The measurement cell includes an oxygen-ion conductivity solid electrolyte, a first precious metal sensing electrode, a second precious metal sensing electrode, and a first electromotive force lead wire. The first and second precious metal sensing electrodes are formed respectively on both sides of the oxygen pumping cell. The first electromotive force lead wire is extended from the first and second precious metal sensing electrodes. The oxygen pumping cell coverts the nitrogen oxide gas into nitrogen monoxide, dissolves the converted nitrogen monoxide into oxygen and nitrogen, and includes an oxide catalyst electrolyte layer, a first auxiliary precious metal sensing electrode, a second auxiliary precious metal sensing electrode(23), and a second electromotive force lead wire. The plug is arranged in a side where the second precious metal sensing electrode of the measurement cell is formed.
