<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method that provide improved protection of the apparatus for sterilizing containers. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus 1 for sterilizing container 10 includes a movable carrier 2 on which a plurality of sterilization units 4 are provided, sterilization units respectively include a charge carrier source, as well as a rod-like body 12 that is designed such that it can be inserted into the inner space of the containers 10 through a mouth, with an exit window provided on the rod-like body 12, through which exit window the charge carriers can exit, with a plurality of holding units 14 for holding the containers, the holding units 14 being movable relative to the rod-like bodies 12 in a longitudinal direction L of the rod-like bodies 12.
