<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat pump water heater that reliably detects refrigerant leakage from a condensation heat exchanger in an early stage when a flammable refrigerant is used. <P>SOLUTION: A top part area in the entire horizontal length of a housing 5 is partitioned by a lateral partition plate 58 to form a partitioned heating chamber 63. A lower side of the lateral partition plate 58 is horizontally divided into a ventilation room 61 and a machine room 62 by a vertical partition plate 57. In the ventilation room 61, an evaporation heat exchanger 14 and a fan 14a are installed. In the machine room 62, a compressor 11 and an expansion valve 13 are installed. In the heating chamber 63, a condensation heat exchanger 12 is installed. At the right back end of the lateral partition plate 58, an opening 581 communicating with the machine room 62 and a cylindrical passage part 59 are provided, and a water circulation pipe 22 and a refrigerant circulation pipe 15 are arranged to lead to the machine room 62.
