A display element (10) comprises: an upper substrate (first substrate (2)); a lower substrate (second substrate (3)); and a polarized fluid (16) which is movably sealed in a display space (S) formed between the upper substrate (2) and the lower substrate (3) on either an effective display region (P1) side or a non-effective display region (P2) side. A tone correction unit (71), which carries out a prescribed tone correction process upon a tone value which is included in an image input signal from outside, is disposed upon the display element (10). A display control unit (50) uses the tone value from the tone correction unit (71) to generate an instruction signal to a signal driver (signal voltage application unit (7)) and outputs same to the signal driver (7).
