The bumper system has a cross-beam (4) arranged transverse to a driving direction, and two longitudinal beams (2), which are arranged parallel to the driving direction. The cross-beam is connected directly or by coupling elements (3) with the longitudinal beams. The cross-beam is provided to buckle with an end-section (7) in case of front collision with very low offset, where a deformation element is arranged behind the cross-beam. The deformation element is made of a plastic or lightweight metal, particularly a fiber reinforced plastic, foam or aluminum cast iron. An independent claim is included for a method for energy absorption during frontal collision of a motor vehicle with an obstacle.
