The segment (25) has autonomous belt-drives for transporting a workpiece from one end of the segment to another end of the segment and fixed in parallel with side rails (12, 14). Driving wheels (16a, 16b) are fixed intermediate to upper idler wheels (18) along the side rails. A flat belt (20) is in firm contact with an upper surface of the upper idler wheels most proximate to the former end of the segment and a lower surface of return idler wheels (18a). The upper idler wheels, lower loop-back wheels and the return idler wheels are rotated in a plane parallel to the rails. An independent claim is also included for a method for conveying a workpiece on a conveyor segment.
