A method of controlling a small cell base station of a wireless telecommunication network, a small cell base station and a computer program product are disclosed. The method of controlling a small cell base station of a wireless telecommunication network comprises: detecting uplink transmissions between user equipment and a base station on a frequency used for downlink transmissions by said small cell base station, said downlink transmissions being transmitted with a pre-existing maximum transmission power; determining a modified maximum transmission power for downlink transmissions by said small cell base station; and applying a series of stepwise adjustments to adjust said pre-existing maximum transmission power towards said modified maximum transmission power for downlink transmissions. Through this approach, rather than making the change in maximum transmission power in one step, the change in maximum transmission power may be made as a number of smaller changes over a longer period of time. Such an approach reduces the probability of the rapid handover of user equipment. Instead, the user equipment is more likely to be gradually handed over. This reduces the peak loading on the control channels in order to perform such handovers. Also, the change in coding rate of the control channels is decreased. By spreading the adjustments over a period of time, any changes to the maximum transmission power may be reversed, should the detected uplink transmissions be transient. It will be appreciated that this helps to improve the stability of the network.
|
