<p>PURPOSE: An air conditioner and a method for controlling the same are provided to improve a cooling capacity and a heating capacity and to improve the operating efficiency of a system by controlling the best pressure for the system. CONSTITUTION: An air conditioner comprises an outdoor unit, one or more indoor units, a refrigerant pipe, a receiver, an outdoor temperature detecting unit, an indoor load detecting unit(190), and a control unit(200). The outdoor unit includes a compressor and an outdoor heat exchanger. The one or more indoor units are connected to the outdoor unit and include an indoor heat exchanger. The refrigerant pipe connects the outdoor unit and the indoor unit. The receiver stores at least some of refrigerant flowing in the refrigerant pipe. The outdoor temperature detecting unit is arranged in outdoors and detects outdoor temperature. The indoor load detecting unit detects an operation capacity of the indoor unit. The control unit controls the amount of the refrigerant to be stored in the receiver based on at least one of values detected by the outdoor temperature detecting unit and the indoor load detecting unit.
