Disclosed herein is processes and intermediate compounds useful in the production of normorphinans and derivatives thereof, namely related to compounds of formula 21a, wherein the substituents are as defined within the specification. A process for the preparation of compound of formula 21 via hydrolysis of the compound of 21a is also disclosed. Further disclosed is a process for the preparation of a compound of formula 24.
