摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for an optical sensor that enhances sensitivity by use of slow light. <P>SOLUTION: An optical sensor includes at least one optical coupler 46, an optical waveguide 42 including a plurality of loops, and an optical detector. The optical waveguide is in optical communication with the at least one optical coupler and is mechanically decoupled from the at least one optical coupler such that the at least one optical coupler and the optical waveguide can be moved relative to one another by rotation of the optical waveguide about the symmetry axis of the plurality of loops. The optical waveguide is configured to receive a first optical signal 14 from the at least one optical coupler. The first optical signal 14 has a group velocity and a phase velocity while propagating through at least a portion of the optical waveguide, the group velocity less than the phase velocity. An interference between the first optical signal and a second optical signal is affected by rotation of the optical waveguide about the symmetry axis.
