The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for performing device-to-device (D2D) communication in a wireless access system supporting the D2D communication. More specifically, the method comprises the steps of: receiving, from a base station (BS), information regarding a discovery reference signal (DRS) transmitted from a mobile station (MS) which communicates using a cellular network; monitoring DRSs transmitted from one or more neighboring MSs; generating a list of the one or more neighboring MSs by using the DRSs received from the one or more neighboring MSs; transmitting the generated list of the one or more neighboring MSs to the BS; receiving, from the BS, information regarding resources allocated for the D2D communication; and performing the D2D communication with another BS by using the allocated resources.
