The method involves refilling ink fountains with anilox ink, and starting a washing operation for an anilox inking unit i.e. cartridge, after emptying an associated ink fountain and before emptying another ink fountain. A washing operation for the inking unit is started after emptying the respective ink fountains, and a refilling process of the former ink fountain is started while washing operations for inking units are in running condition. The refilling process of another ink fountain is started after the completion of a washing program for the inking unit. An independent claim is also included for an offset printing machine.
