The purpose of the present invention is to elucidate a novel gene mutation which is a cause of cancer, and to thereby provide a method for detecting the gene mutation or a protein having the gene mutation, a method for detecting the occurrence of cancer in a subject, a method for diagnosing cancer in a subject, and a primer set, a probe and a detection kit for achieving the methods. Provided is a method for detecting a fibroblast proliferation factor receptor 4 (FGFR4) mutant in a subject, which comprises a step of detecting the occurrence of the mutation of a glycine residue located at position-183 in an FGFR4 tyrosine kinase domain to a cysteine residue in a sample collected from the subject.
