Provided are fluorine-containing magnesium oxide powder which can emit ultra-violet rays when excited by ultra-violet rays produced by Xe gas discharge and a method for producing the same. The fluorine-containing magnesium oxide powder contains fluorine in the range of 0.01 to 10 wt%, has a purity of magnesium oxide of 99. 8 wt% or more (which is based on the total weight excluding fluorine), and has a BET specific surface area of 0.1 to 30m^2/g. The method for preparing the magnesium oxide powder includes sintering magnesium oxide having a purity of 99.95 wt% or more and a BET specific surface area of 5 to 150m^2/g in the presence of a fluorine source or under fluorine containing atmosphere at more than 850 deg.C for 10 minutes. |
