<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting device saving energy and having long lifetime. <P>SOLUTION: A light emitting device includes: a surface light emitting body 80 capable of being developed from a housed state to an operating state; and current control means for controlling driving current so as to allow a developed section of the surface light emitting body to emit light. The surface light emitting body 80 is formed such that a plurality of light emitting plates 801 are connected in an accordion-like form, and the current control means has an electrode corresponding to each of the light emitting plates 801. The surface light emitting body 80 is developed by increasing an angle between adjacent light emitting plates 801, and is housed by decreasing the angle. When the angle is equal to a predetermined angle or less, a connection between the electrodes is disconnected, and, when the angle is more than the predetermined angle, the connection between the electrodes is formed.
