A process for producing char and fuel gas in which carbonaceous material like coal is degasified with oxygen containing gases in a fluidized bed reactor at a 5 temperature of more than about 1 000*C and at a pressure of about 1 bar to about 40 bar, characterized in that the supply of oxygen within the reactor is adjusted or regulated such that more than 60% of the fixed carbon in the carbonaceous material is recovered in the produced char.
