The system (1) has a contact bridge (9) switching back and forth between two stable switching positions when current exceeds a response threshold value of the current limiting system and under formation and extinguishing of electric arcs during opening and re-closing of double-contact points. The contact bridge remains in one of the two stable switching positions if the current falls below a close threshold value of a contact system (5). Four fixed contact pieces (6, 6a) are diagonally and electrically connected in pairs with one another.
