A thermal shock protected gas sensor (20) includes a body (28), a ceramic sensor element (24) positioned in the body, and a protection tube (36). Thermal shock protection against liquid water impingement on the hot ceramic sensor element is provided by a sleeve (46) of ceramic fiber woven fabric positioned between the ceramic sensor element and the protection tube, and an annular gap (G) between the ceramic sensor element and the protection tube on at least one side of the sleeve. Alternately, thermal shock protection is provided by a porous monolithic cast ceramic layer (460) between the ceramic sensor element and the protection tube. |
