PURPOSE: A charging device and a method of providing electricity to an electric vehicle is provided to offer a charging device to sense the presence of a combustible gas for delivering power to an electric vehicle based on the presence of the combustible gases, thereby reducing the potential for undesirable ignition of the combustible gases. CONSTITUTION: A request to deliver power from power source to an electric vehicle is received(202). A first monitoring signal indicative of combustible gases within ambient air is transmitted(204). Based at least in part on the received first signal, whether electrical power is to be delivered is determined(206). Based at least in part on the received first signal, whether combustible gases are present within ambient air is determined(208). Power is delivered to the electric vehicle after no combustible gas to be present within ambient air is determined(210). A notification signal that no power is to be delivered to the electric vehicle is displayed(212). A second monitoring signal indicative of combustible gases is transmitted during delivery of electric power to the electric vehicle(214). Based at least in part on the received second monitoring signal, the power source is disconnected(216). Based at least in part on the second monitoring signal, whether combustible gases are present within ambient air is determined(218).
