<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To normally read an image from a small-size manuscript like a card. <P>SOLUTION: A CPU 101 controls reading processing to start conveyance of a manuscript from a manuscript conveying part 105, start reading the manuscript by an image reading part 104 earlier than an arrival time predicted by a manuscript passing time prediction part 109 by a first time, and complete reading of the manuscript by the image reading part 104 later than the passing time by a second time. Also, a manuscript image region detection part 107 detects the image of the manuscript from image data read at the image reading part 104 by reading processing.
