<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a graphite mold which is easily made and is low-cost, for which cooling does not require any long time period, and from which a gas is easily removed, in the graphite mold for making a silica glass crucible. <P>SOLUTION: A mold 66 for making a fused silica crucible includes a cylindrical can 78 having an interior bore 80. A graphite insert 70 is received in the bore and has an upper surface adapted so as to form the lower surface of the crucible while the interior bore of the can forms the side wall of the crucible. A silica grain 124 is deposited in the mold while it rotates. Bores formed in the can above the insert and in the insert draw air through the silica during fusion. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
