<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure that even when local pixel displacement occurs due to pixel insertion or thinning-out, edge detection processing will be exactly executed as compared to when the present configuration is not employed. <P>SOLUTION: An expansion/contraction processing unit 41 performs expansion or contraction processing by inserting pixels or thinning out pixels. During this expansion/contraction processing, a storage unit 42 stores therein the positions of inserted pixels or the positions of thinned out pixels. And, on the basis of information on the positions of inserted pixels or the positions of thinned out pixels, a calculation unit 43 calculates for each line of image data the information on displacement of the respective pixel positions relative to the corresponding pixel positions on an adjacent line immediately above. A pattern switching unit 44 switches the edge detection pattern of an edge detection unit 45 on the basis of the displacement information.
