Process for purifying a gas stream contg. S-contg. cpds. as well as O2 and opt. SO2, comprises carrying out at least the following stages: (1) hydrogenating the O2 and opt. SO2 in the gas stream; (2) converting the organic S cpds. in the gas stream into H2S and (3) converting the H2S into elementary sulphur. The gas stream may be washed with water prior to stages (1), (2) and (3) to condition the gas stream to pref. moisture content and to suppress the undesired CO-shift side reaction.
