The internal combustion engine has an exhaust gas turbocharger that is provided in a turbine (32). The input side of the turbine is connected with an output side of a compressor (46) for pressurizing compressed gas around the turbine. Two working cylinders (16,18) are arranged in series with a compressor cylinder (28) inside a crank case (10). The working pistons and a compressor piston are driven by a crankshaft. An independent claim is included for a method for operating internal combustion engine.
