The device has interpreter device drivers (DTM1-DTM4) implementing a frame application (12) of a plant asset management tool (6). Electronic device descriptions are translated by an interpreter of the tool, where the device generates menu options (18) in the tool, and the menu options are selected by a user. An Internet and/or intranet connection (22) to computerized maintenance management systems (20) is made by the tool if the menu options are selected by the user. Data is exchanged between the tool and the management system. The Internet connection is World Wide Web, and the intranet connection is a local area network. The device drivers are in the form of device-specific software. An independent claim is also included for a system for storage and/or retrieval of field device data.
